For the third consecutive year, ABConservation participated in the Fête de la Nature (Celebration of nature) at the Jardin des Plantes of Paris. The theme of this year: seeing the invisible! Quite an appropriate theme to talk about the binturong, knowing how challenging it is to observe it in the wild. Indeed, as you know, it is a solitary, arboreal and nocturnal species. Three aspects of its behaviour that make it so secretive.
Our main activity was to start with a presentation of the binturong, as we’re enthusiastic ambassadors of the species, then to introduce ABConservation and the Bearcat Study Program, showing a variety of equipment we use to conduct our mission: camera trap, radio collar, receiver, antenna, GPS, binoculars, hammock, etc.
Following these discussions with the visitors, they were invited to play our giant snakes (or rather binturongs) and ladders game. Each player would roll the dice to move along the board, then they were asked a question about the binturong. If their answer was correct, they could move two squares forward, but if the answer was wrong, they had to go back one square. Learning is fun ^^ !
We had a very sunny and enriching weekend. It was a pleasure to be able to work during these two days.
Thanks to the organizers at the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, and to our volunteers Cyrielle, Melissa, Arnaud and Emmanuel! Thank you all!
