From the start, the weather was on our side: mild and sunny enough to bring a lot of people to « La Ménagerie », the historical zoo in Paris, but with cloudy spells that would keep active our rather nocturnal viverridae.
Information panels, stand with goodies – key rings, bags, even postal stamps to commemorate Binturong Day, and masks for children, everything was ready when the first visitors arrived. They were channeled by our welcome team to the binturong enclosure or « la Rotonde » where we displayed the laureate projects of a competition among schools organized by the Natural History Museum on awareness-raising actions . The winners from collège Camille Claudel and lycée Louis Le Grand presented us with drawings and a film on binturong awareness, the other with the moving story of a young binturong female whose life is wrecked by the destruction of his home forest to turn it into a palm-oil plantation.
All day long, ABConservation team has raised public awareness of the binturong pleas, answered questions and made our favorite animal known of hundreds of persons.
Our make-up artist and mask workshop have released in the zoo paths tens of little binturongs and also panthers, tigers and gibbons.
We warmly thank other participants in Europe, America, Australia and Asia, which have celebrated Binturong Day and given the binturong’s cause the truly global scope it deserves.
You will find photographic record of the day on our website gallery, and we hope to present soon contributions from participants all over the world.
Time went by quickly and this encounter with a large public has given us a lot of positive energy for future awareness projects.
We will communicate on this later. And you, will you tell us how your binturong day was?
