Since the beginning of her volunteering mission in Palawan in 2018, our scientific officer, Agathe, has been involved in another local organization: the Palawan Animal Welfare Foundation. Founded and entirely managed by a Belgium woman, Jacqueline Baut, with inexhaustible resources, this organization is working in the improvement of the welfare in Palawan of the stray cats and dogs, but also of farm animals.
Indeed, as is the case in many developing countries, stray cats and dogs on the island are innumerable, and often in a pitiful state. With the help of two local veterinarians, Dr. Hiceta and Dr. Quintero, her faithful assistant, Flore, as well as many volunteers – whose list is far too large to be mentioned – Jacqueline organizes free sterilization campaigns in different locations on the island. The latest managed to sterilize more than 100 cats and dogs in El Nido Town.
Always in shape, Jacqueline never stops and her dynamism takes her well beyond a few sterilization campaigns: helping to manage impound animals, checking the standards of loading water buffalo in the liners for Manila, organizing a network of volunteers for the realization of first aid in El Nido and Port Barton, two cities in which no veterinarian is available… Jacqueline puts animal wellbeing at the heart of her approach and even travels to Manila to participate in the debate committees on new animal management laws.
It is therefore with pleasure and enthusiasm that Agatha joined the team of this activist with a big heart. Indeed, as a veterinarian, Agathe naturally found her place during sterilization campaigns in the management and monitoring of anesthesia. Little by little, their shared passion for animals brought Jacqueline and Agathe closer together, and the two of them might well find projects in common with the two associations… Keep posted !
