In its third edition of the World Binturong Day, ABConservation was (once more) welcomed by the Ménagerie, Le zoo du Jardin des Plantes of Paris. This day, which was meteorically announced as wet and cold, was surprisingly warm and sunny. As the previous years, make-up artists were here for transforming the kids (sometimes adults too) in little binturongs ready to invade the zoo. These little bearcats were invited to prepare enrichments for the couple of binturongs of the Menagerie, Hagan and Haya (elected as the couple with the European record of babies).
This workshop was followed by 3 presentations during which our president presented the binturong and the couple of the Ménagerie that she knows very well because she took care of them during 5 years. Furthermore, she explained the threats over the binturongs in the wild, and presented the Bearcat Study Program launched by ABConservation this year on the Palawan Island.
Then, the kids between 8 and 12 years old were invited to participate in a quiz integrally made up of questions about the binturong. The kid who was the faster in giving the largest number of right answers has received a teddy Binturong as a reward.
But this day didn’t take place without any problem because only Hagan wished to show up (and only from 2:00pm). So, our president had the opportunity to experiment a presentation on the binturong without any visible binturong to the visitors… It seemed to be a successful experience because the visitors didn’t flee.
Finally, this third edition was the theatre of many enriching meetings with a lot of enthusiasts about photography, with binturong lovers and with other people recently amazed by this unknown species.
For the success of this day, special thanks to Mathilde and Sandrine from the education department of the Menagerie and to Christian, Jojo, Frédéric, Irène, Arnaud, Emmanuel, Thomas, Anaïs, Mila, Florian, Nicolas, Géraldine and Andie (our volunteers who represent the spirit of ABConservation). Many thanks to Monique, the volunteer from the SECAS who accompanies us since 2015, and a final thank to Myriam and Régine for helping us.
